Cassel Gallery, in conjunction with Goorin Bros. Hat Company, proudly presents the closing event for ‘American Made’, an art exhibition and live music event, scheduled for February 4th, 2012 from 8-11pm. ‘American Made’ is an exploration of the zeitgeist and an illumination of what artist participants believe it means to be ‘Made in America’. This exhibition is both satirical and earnest in its exploration of the contemporary American moment.

The artists participating in ‘American Made’ represent diverse artistic perspectives and styles. Prairie Prince is a greatly heralded musician who is also a very talented and achieved fine artist. He will be displaying several paintings, as well as performing live with several of his local bands. Lucien Shapiro will be displaying some stunning found object, mixed media sculpture. There are also several talented graffiti artists involved in the show, that have a keen understanding of fine art as well as their prolific street art. Rich Colman and several other very accomplished fine artists will also be displaying their version of ‘American Made’ themed creations. The opening reception of this exhibit was such a great success that Cassel Gallery has asked the participating artists to create some new pieces to display at this closing party event.

Year of the Dragon Art Show this Saturday

This coming Saturday, January 21st, 2012, I will be showing my newest piece titled 'Dragoness' in Seventh Son's 'Year of the Dragon' art exhibit. 'Adorned' art show pics

I spent this past weekend with some very special ladies, creating, designing and adorning the Goorin Bros. Melrose Hat Shop. Renee Fontana created stunning floral, feather, and plant displays, accenting the art and merchandise exquisitely. Erin Ashford decorated the walls with her beautiful portraiture photography and mixed media pieces, which enhanced the space and complimented my paintings in perfect unison. Monique Sade Hernandez-Fuentes, our wonderful gallery assistant and Goorin merchandise expert, gave a helping hand and eye to all of our styling. The crew of the Melrose Hat Shop organized an amazing reception and were a great asset in the creation of this show. Many thanks to all the lovely ladies that made this trip, reception and installation a huge success!!!

GoorinBrothers in cooperation with the Cassel Gallery is proud to present ‘Adorned,’ a new art exhibit created by Amandalynn, Renee Fontana, and Erin Ashford. This collective of women has been working and showing together for several years, and has become a strong unit of inspiration and creativity. Each lady represents a different field of artwork. Amandalynn is a fine art painter, muralist, designer, and conservator, whose based out of San Francisco. She has been curating and exhibiting artwork in galleries and venues worldwide for many years. Amandalynn’s main subjects are seductive yet secretive women, adorned with an array of different accessories and stories. Her work has been greatly enhanced by her fellow artists, especially Renee Fontana and Erin Ashford.

ReneeFontana has been working as a dedicated floral designer and consultant for over 15 years. She has a passion for art and design, and has worked with Amandalynn on several interior mural installations and gallery shows, complimenting the artwork with floral sculpture. Passion coupled with experience has helped Renee deliver innovative arrangements that emphasize the symbolic relationship between art, nature, and design.

ErinAshford is a photographer and artist, trained as a still documentary photographer. She’s inspired by the constant evolution of women historically and culturally, and continues to empower people through candid and staged photography. Through stunning imagery of live performances, behind-the-scenes portraits, and her artistic creations, Erin is continually evolving. Erin Ashford and Amandalynn have shown artwork alongside each other for several years. Erin has an ability to capture the female form in a strong and sensual way, bringing to light something universal.

These three women have a long-term dedication and passion to all their creations. This newest exhibit, ‘Adorned’, is an exquisite display of a combination of all their talents. Just finished up another great day of painting with the Few and Far ladies! The amazing Beth Emmerich hooked up this mural with the great jungle background, super sic elephant god, and spooky cave, Mags embraced her inner character and hooked us up with a rad giraffe and flying squirrel character, as well as our hittin up our crew. Agana is in progress with a lovely native lady and baby, and I painted a Lady Lioness. These chicks are so much fun to paint with...looking forward to much more!

'Adorned' is my newest art exhibit opening Saturday, November 19th 2011 from 7-10pm in Los Angeles. I am showing alongside two very talented ladies, Erin Ashford and Renee Fontana. Both the ladies joined me in my solo show, 'Head over Heels' at Cassel Gallery in San Francisco, CA. The show was such a success that Cassel Gallery and Goorin Bros. asked that we show again in their Melrose Hat Shop. We will be displaying new work as well as a few pieces from our last show. 'Spectrum' art opening at Fabric 8

I recently submitted my painting, 'Time', for a juried group exhibition of works addressing color at Fabric 8 Gallery . The title of the show is 'Spectrum', and the pieces in were chosen from 150 submissions, and feature artists Amandalynn, Ben Needham, David Ball, David Garvey, Geoff Campen, Jessica Eastburn, Ken Keirns, Mike Kimball, and St. Monci.

Exploring the spectrum of color as well as a spectrum of subject matter – from geometry and texture to illustration and portraiture – the show covers the breadth of fabric8’s program while also featuring artists that haven’t shown there regularly. The jury consisted of several painters that the gallery works with frequently.
Simultaneously, new pieces will be introduced in the sculpture garden from artists Calvin Ma, Shadoe Delgado, and Erika Sanada.

Spectrum will be on exhibit from October 14 through November 7
The opening reception will be held on Friday, October 14, from 7PM until 10PM.

For, Against, and the Truth

I was invited by Stormie Mills , an amazing artist and friend of mine, to join in on a group show that he is curating at the Linton and Kay Gallery in Perth, Western Australia. Each artist was asked to depict three different parts of their 'self'. The first perspective being how you see yourself, another being how you think others see you, and an honest account of yourself, a 'naked' truth of who you are. Obviously a difficult challenge for an artist, I chose to use one of my favorite models to express the emotions of these three different states of being. Each piece is painted in acrylic and varnish on antique mirrors. I am very honored to have been chosen to be a part of this show and to show amongst such talented artists.

This is part of a project being done to memorialize one of the most influential artists of my life...

A beautiful memory and a constant inspiration is what Kazu will always be to me. He was a huge influence on me during my schooling at the Academy. I took Kazu's class three times because he was someone who really took the time to understand an artist, their technique, and ultimately their passion. I came back one time as an alumni to sit in on Kazu's class, I wasn't in the best place in my life, and somewhat frustrated in my position as an artist. Kazu introduced me to his class, and referred to me as 'Prolific', which was shocking to me. However, ever since that moment, I knew that if someone as prolific as Kazu would say such a thing about me, that I had to live up to it, so I'm trying...and I will never forget this wonderful artist, teacher, and friend.

This is one of my newest pieces, 'Luscious Lucci' , she was painted for an upcoming show at the Benjamin Benjamin Gallery in Portland, OR. The entire show is dedicated to Susan Lucci. I was inspired by an ad in 'Cigar Aficionado' published in October 1999. My painting and sketch will be displayed at the opening tomorrow, September 15th, 2011.

Never ending story.

There are several TV specials and fan events commemorating the network end of All My Children before it heads online. Now, artists in Portland, Oregon have put together their own tribute to the ABC soap opera's most iconic figure Susan Lucci (Erica Kane).

From September 15 – October 1, The Benjamin Benjamin Art Gallery, at 720 NW Lovejoy, will feature works from artists who have "captured the ageless television goddess" in the exhibit The Never Ending Story, Art Inspired by Susan Lucci. “What inspired my piece started off as some sketches on a pad. Being that Jarritos was founded in Mexico, I wanted my illustration to reflect that authenticity. It almost felt obvious to incorporate a Luchador. I wasn’t sure who I was drawing at the time; but ironically, some of my friends said that the character kind of looked like me.”

“Wining this competition has made my year. It is such an honor to have been chosen amongst the other great competitors. I feel very lucky and humble to have won. Winning the year supply of Jarritos has made my belly smile, and having my art published has fed my artistic ego. But to my surprise, the best part of winning thus far is making my friends and family proud!”

Second Place- Zofia Bogusz

Zofia Bogusz was born in Poland in the '80s. She lives and works in New York City, where she received a degree from the School of Visual Arts. Zofia regularly exhibits her art, and enjoys doing freelance illustration.

Zofia paints women against bold and dramatic landscapes, in which natural elements such as water and sunlight color the dynamic between the individual and the external world. She strives to render the balance of effortless beauty and strength that exists within the female form. Zofia's paintings are inspired by individual histories, memories, and experiences. Pop culture imagery also plays a crucial role in her work, creating a grounded sense of the everyday.

Zofia's mediums of choice are oil paint, graphite, and colored pencils on hand-cut wood.

Third Place- Geraldine Said

Geraldine Said is from Mexico City and has worked at Grey Mexico as the Art Director. Currently she is living in Los Angeles and helping her husband with his boutique Ariane. Since moving to Los Angeles, Geraldine has been doing freelance work. When she isn’t working she loves immersing herself in photography and her charity organization H.A.T (www.facebook.com/hatgives).

Peekaboo Sheila

Here's a few sneak 'peeks' from a photoshoot done last weekend shot by Dylan Maddux . We were working on a feature photo campaign of my newest Goorin line that will be hitting stores late next month. I illustrated some peekaboo pinups, and with the help of Anna Delis, made them into a line of peekaboo ties. My lovely friend Sheila Dyche modeled for our shoot and was captured perfectly as my 'Sheela' image. This illustration will be found hidden inside of a custom tie as well as in a few hats. There a several other peekaboo ladies illustrated in this line, but this was our first chance to bring one to life!! Many thanks to Sheila and Dylan for rockin the shoot. I will post the full shoot with product next month for the release.

'Head over Heels' is Amandalynn's solo art show, currently on display at Cassel Gallery in San Francisco. Inspired by silent film actresses and showgirls of the 1920's-40's, Amandalynn pays tribute to these women by capturing them in provocative yet classy portraits. Amandalynn collaborated on pieces with one of her favorite photographers, Erin Ashford, who contributed pieces from her continuing queer burlesque series  from the South. This particular set of imagery was inspired by Josephine Baker of the Harlem Renaissance. Conserving Caro

Last week, I joined up again with Tracy Powers Objects Conservation team, and Lucien Shapiro, to restore a Caro sculpture in Healdsburg. The clearcoat layer that had been applied several years ago and in several layers was failing and creating a white/chalky appearance all over the piece. After many, many insane hours of using very strong stripping agents and scraping we managed to remove most all of the coating. We will be going back to seal the piece later this summer. It was once again, a very strenuous and tedious job, but had a great crew to help power through....

Conserving Louise Nevelson's 'Ocean's Gate'

I just finished up a big project yesterday with Tracy Powers and her conservation crew. We cleaned up, patched up and refinished Louise Nevelson's sculpture, 'Ocean's Gate', which is on display at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. It was a tedious process, but with help of Tracy and her crew, it turned out to be a success. We also had great help from the de Young conservation staff, led by Lesley Bone. I just got back from a great weekend in LA. I started off Friday at LA Art Machine by finishing up a piece that I started during the Hollywood Art and Design walk a couple of months ago. I got to work in their great gallery space which hosts an amazing wooden sculpture by Gustavo Godoy. On Saturday I went with my LA fam to check out the 'Art in the Streets' exhibit at the Moca, and was blown away. Then ended the weekend with a Sunny father's day BBQ. All in all, a great weekend.....

Kazu Sano

Kazu Sano was a truly prolific and inspirational man, artist, teacher and friend. I just found out that he passed on in his sleep last week. I was so fortunate to have been influenced by this great man while studying at the Academy of Art in SF. There is always that one particular teacher or person who sees you differently than all the others, and for me that was Kazu. I studied figure painting with him, and was so inspired and understood by him, that I took his class three times. Knowing someone such as Kazu, gives me the hope that no matter how long we live on this earth, our vision and inspiration can and will continue to touch others for eternity. Rest peacefully Kazu, you will be missed.

1333 Minna Release Party/ Art show

This is my newest piece, Ethereal Eve, which I painted as part of my own custom window display in the Haight Street Goorin Hat shop. This coming Saturday, April 30th, Goorin will be hosting two events promoting the release of the new 1333 Minna hat collection. The first event takes place at the Goorin Hat Shop on Haight Street in SF, which will then be followed up by an Art Show reception at the new Cassel Gallery at 1261 Howard St. in SF.

This past week, Prairie Prince and I went up to the Guernville, CA on the Russian River to install the marque for the newly refurbished Russian River Theater. This was no small task and we were fortunate to have the assistance of the owner and visionary, Jerry Knight, and some other helpful friends. Prairie and I painted the River Goddess's in his studio in San Francisco and will be applying lettering and further clear coats within the next week. We are very pleased to be such a featured part of Russian River community.

Yesterday, March 26th, LA Art Machine flew me to Los Angeles to be part of their live painting Vox Humana event at the West Hollywood Art and Design Walk. They provided me with a pre-built wood panel canvas, that was placed on Melrose, and I went to work. Here are some progress shots of my work, I still have a few hours to go on this piece, which I will finish up in May. The final piece will be on display at the LA Art Machine International 'Urban Art Festival' July 14th-17th. Felix Forever Mural complete

I was asked to refurbish and enhance this piece of furniture, then incorporate some kind of mural display and layout for the women's retail section. I had painted the hat ladies and gold leaf detailed, as well as did some of my lace tricks for the effect of vintage doilies. Over the holiday season, UnderGround Colors, my custom painting and restoration company, started on a new project at UCSF Mission Bay campus in San Francisco. This time we are bringing to life the vision of the ever prolific artist, Paul Kos. The imagery is going to be applied to hundreds of thousands of 1 inch by 1 inch squares on the wall of the lobby inside the Helen Diller Cancer Research Center. The image's message will spell out 'Everything Matters' in an obscured pattern of juxtaposed colors. It is sure to be a very intense project, but we are happy to have such a great crew and to be able to bring this amazing artist's vision to life.

The gallery reception takes place at the new 1333Minna Gallery space located at 1261 Howard Street @ 9th Street, San Francisco, CA, 94103. He will have new works and collaborations with artists such as:

Come celebrate the incredible lifetime talent of Prairie Prince, an extremely prolific artist, musician and mentor to myself, as he turns 60 years old this year. We plan on having live bands performing with and for Prairie during the evening, as well as a large group art show. The name is of event is ‘Virtuoso’, and the theme is art inspired by music and music that inspires art. The term ‘Virtuoso’ is defined as ‘A person with masterly skill or technique in the arts’. 'Sometimes' showing this weekend

This is my newest completed painting, titled 'Sometimes'. She is part of my Fabulous 40s series and the first one is which I infused more color into the scheme. 'Sometimes' is painted in acrylic on canvas and is 3ft x 4ft. She will be showing this coming Saturday evening, December 4th, in San Francisco at the Chillin Productions Holiday Event.

Fabulous 40s weekend progress

I started painting a wall today with my friend, Taco (and special guest, Nick P). We are redoing an older mural, I'm doing one of my new 1940's inspired pieces, Taco is painting a Felix piece for his friend, and my sister, Margaretta, plans to come through and hook up the background. I also did some more work on my 'Sometimes' piece that will be showing this upcoming Saturday night...

This past Sunday I finished up a mural project that my sister and I were commissioned to create by Howard Fallon as a memorial to his wife and daughter. This family has lost so much, but Howard had the great idea of doing a beautiful painting to honor these very special women in his life. I am very honored to have worked on this project and have really enjoyed getting to know Howard. He and his daughter, Shane, will be hosting a mural dedication on November 27th at 4pm. The mural is located on Comeford Lane off of Church and 27th street in San Francisco, CA.

She is 30" wide x 40" tall, acrylic on canvas, and will be on display tomorrow night, Saturday, November 13th, 2010 at Old Crow Art Gallery and Tattoo shop in Oakland, Ca. This is an art exhibition and benefit show for Keep-a-Breast.org , I also custom painted a bamboo bicycle frame for the benefit.
