Moma

I had a lovely evening last night at the SFMOMA. It was the opening of several exhibits, including the architecture and design exhibit, The Utopian Impulse: Buckminster Fuller and the Bay Area, and Parra : Weirded Out. I assisted on restoring/repainting a piece from Ant Farm studios that was on display, titled 'Convention City'. The exhibit was really fascinating with futurist ideas for enviromental architecture and much more. Parra's mural installation is amazing as well, and definitely worth checking out. I also took a quick look at the Dutch photographer, Rineke Dijkstra, exhibit, 'A Retrospective ', which was stunning. I highly reccomend taking a trip to the Moma this month!

My piece is titled, 'Night Watch', it is painted in acrylic and spray paint on top of collaged papers and of course, mirror. Opening night for the exhibit in April 5th from 5-8pm at the beautiful Cannery Gallery, 2801 Leavenworth, Suite 111.

Reyes and Dylan Maddux showing at Known this Sat, March 24

This coming Saturday, March 24th from 6-11pm, two good friends of mine, Victor Reyes and Dylan Maddux , will be showing at Known Gallery in LA, CA. These two are extremely talented and have put an incredible amount of work into this show. I look forward to celebrating this exhibit with them and am sure many others will too. If you are in the area, come through and check it out!

Known Gallery is pleased to present The Jungle, featuring new paintings by Victor Reyes. In this ambitious body of work, Reyes’ illuminates the savage nature of humanity in the context of modern day America while simultaneously exposing the primal, mammalian inclinations that pulse just under the facade of contemporary culture. The artist critiques the premium placed on notions of “civility” while celebrating instinct and acknowledging the dark underbelly of our society.
The Jungle is a two yearlong exploration of human nature and survival. Jungle themes first appeared on Reyes’ black and while murals and have been translated into the subject of many paintings on wood panel that explore a variety of color palettes.

Chances are, you’ve seen the work of Dylan Maddux without realizing it. Maddux has been shooting crisp, raw, vivid photos all over the globe for years. He always maintains that tangible, almost indescribable, flavor to insure a genuine feel… Be prepared to envy his career. –Katie Zuppann
He has been in Southeast Asia for the last year and a half. Of that time, he spent over a year in Bangkok photographing fashion, red light, and street culture. He has recently moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia where he is currently working on completing his first book. Dylan will be displaying new work done during his time spent in Southeast Asia.

'Rat Bak @ Cha' art show by FATE this wknd

RatBak@'Cha

Fate, Steel, Robert Garcia

Opening Reception
Saturday, March 17th,  8-11pm

Cassel Gallery in conjunction with Goorin Bros. Hat Company proudly presents ‘RatBak@'Cha, an exhibition featuring the artistic stylings of Fate (MSK/AWR), specifically his infamous rat character paintings. Fate is widely known for his notorious career as a graffiti vandal. He has been getting up on the streets, alleys, and dark places of the world for over two decades, immortalizing his mark-making.  This new exhibit, ‘RatBak@'Cha, will be Fate’s second gallery art accomplishment. Aside from graffiti, Fate is known for his modestly scaled paintings depicting animated rat characters in a number of different settings and situations.  His work is identifiable by bold colors and playful line work, which entices the viewer to look further into the stories and character depictions. Fate’s work is deliberately haphazard, and he frequently uses found objects as painting surfaces as a method of relating his artwork back to the street.
Fate will be accompanied by San Francisco based artists Steel, and Robert Garcia.  Steel and Garcia are also known for their animated characters. Steel is mostly associated with his humorous cheeseburger characters, while Garcia’s work has a slightly more serious undertone, inspired by Chicano culture and his childhood experiences within a lower class Hispanic community. Similar to Fate, both Steel and Robert are indentified with the usage of bold color and stimulating line work.
The compilation of these three artists is sure to create a visually compelling, and entertaining exhibition. While all three will have individual pieces on display, they will also be participating in a collaborative installation within the gallery. The opening night is sure to be one of a kind, with live musical performances by A.D. and plenty of lively characters in attendance. Please join us in celebrating the opening of ‘RaBak@'Cha, Saturday, March 17th, 2012 from 8pm-11pm at Cassel Gallery in San Francisco, CA.
